After we all scrambled for day care options while school was closed for four days last week, here’s another change to your calendar. Guilford County Schools has announced the snow makeup days for students. Students will now be in school on Thursday, February 18 and Friday, February 19 and Friday, April 23 and Monday, April 26. A lot of families were relieved that they haven’t taken away any spring break days. Yet.

With the streets covered with snow in Greensboro, it may seem like a strange time to talk about swimming. But if you live near or in Lake Jeanette and have been waiting for the perfect time to join the Lake Jeanette Swim and Tennis Club, they are running a special for new members. If you join before April 15th, the $500 Initiation Fee will be waived.

They are also featuring incentives for current members. You can earn credits towards your membership fee if you refer new members and free guest passes if you pay your membership fee early.

Lake Jeanette Swim and Tennis Club features two different facilities for one membership price. The Lakeside facility has eight lighted tennis courts, a full-service grill, a six lane pool and a kiddie pool along with a newly-added water slide. The Turnstone location also has a six lane pool, a kiddie pool, a new water slide and two lighted tennis courts. The Wildlife Club and Marina, located on Lake Jeanette, offers kayaks, canoes and a pontoon boat for rent. The gazebo and picnic shelter are available for parties. The marina hosts fishing competitions, cookouts and water safety classes.

The magnet school open enrollment period is almost here so now is the time to research if a magnet school is right for your children.  Here in Guilford County, NC the school district that serves Greensboro, High Point, Jamestown, Oak Ridge, Summerfield and all other towns and areas within Guilford County, there are 17 magnet or choice elementary schools. 

What is offered?  Guilford County is one of the few school districts in the nation that offers public Montessori schools.  Erwin, Washington and Triangle Lake schools have curriculums that center around the internationally-acclaimed Montessori program.  This program emphasizes active, hands-on learning and smaller class sizes.  Do you have a child that is always asking about the stars, why leaves are green and change color or loves to dissect the family computer?  Guilford County has two Science and Technology schools that could be the ticket.   Or perhaps they would like to explore our two Global Studies schools, which offer an extended school year and international emphasis.  Does your child have an interest in foreign languages?  Then perhaps one of our two Spanish Immersion schools might be a good fit.

Like everyone around the globe, we have been deeply impacted by the devastation in Haiti.  This Saturday, Team Leung will be sponsoring a local bake sale to aid the people of Haiti.  The bake sale will be held from 10-12 in the Ridgewood neighborhood at Ridgewood Club on James Doak Parkway, Greensboro, NC.

If you are in the area, please stop by for a brownie, muffin or cup of hot chocolate.  100% of the proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross to the special Haiti Relief Fund.

Guilford County Schools has 44 magnet school options and now is your time to explore what choice is best for your student for next school year.  Each and every middle school in the county will host a high school options night starting on January 27th.  Check with the Guilford County Schools website for a complete list of when it will be held at your local school.

There are 22 magnet and choice high school programs from which to choose.  You won’t believe the impressive variety of high-quality programs available.  For example, the Early College at Guilford, which offers an intensive college prep education to highly motivated students, is consistently a national award winner every year.  Student graduate from high school with two years of undergraduate courses from college!  Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts is also a nationally-recognized high school which offers stringent college prep courses with concentration on one of eight arts disciplines.  Both of these schools achieved 100% graduation rate.  Other programs include the prestigious International Baccalaureate Program, offered at four high schools, and the six Middle College Programs, which are offered in cooperation with area colleges.  Click here for complete details on the high school programs offered.

The application period this year is February 13-March 12.  There is no tuition charged for any of the schools but admission is based on students meeting the specific criteria for the individual school and an interview.  Check out my blog in the next couple of weeks for more information about other magnet school options and the programs available at the elementary and middle school level.
